Missions Memo

Mission Memo

THANK YOU:  Thanks to those who donated towards Christmas gifts for the HEAD START CHILDREN who meet in our church, each child received a Crayola dry erase activity board.  The children were told that the gifts were from the church.  It was a great experience for the children & for Mr. & Mrs. Claus who hand-delivered the gifts.  The excitement was seen in the children's eyes.  Each gave Santa a big hug.  When he asked each one what was wanted for Christmas, the replies were either "I don't know" or "A present."  Wouldn't it be wonderful if all our wants were that simple?

OUR DAILY BREAD:  January is an odd-numbered month, so that means casseroles.  If you want to help in this York City food ministry, Zippy Beef Casseroles are due to one of the church freezers on Sunday, January 15.  The recipe is printed in this newsletter.  Casserole trays are on the table across from the mail boxes.

LABELS:  Fawn Methodist Women have long participated in the LABELS FOR EDUCATION program by collecting box tops & & labels from Campbell Soup cans & other food products.  Red Bird Mission in Kentucky uses these labels to buy their vans & many other materials.  A list of participating products has been placed in your church mailbox.  So start collecting & please deposit the labels in the red boxes found near the mail boxes & in the church lobby.

A BOOK CLUB:  We're starting a book club at Fawn Church.  This will be a one-evening event March 14, 2012 at 6:15 PM.  The novel we've chosen is "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah.  This book is a true story about a 12- year old boy in SIERRA LEONE who finds his life drastically changed when rebel forces destroy his town, kill his family, & force him to be a boy soldier.  We'll do more than just read & discuss the words on the page.  We'll also learn about the people in this African nation, their unique customs, & their daily struggles.  In addition to reading & discussing the book, we'll be in prayer for the People in Sierra Leone & will choose a mission project to support in that area (maybe a clothing collection that we'll send to a village).  We might even serve a food commonly eaten by people in that country.

So if this sounds as if it might be your "cup of tea," put your name on a sign-up sheet (on the table by the mail boxes or in the church lobby) starting January 1.  You can purchase the book yourself or contact Jean Maisch who will order one for you.  We'll need to know by January 22 so we can get the book in your hands to read (a little over 200 pages).  And SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS EVENT!  It's not just for our church members: we'd be thrilled to have people from the community join us in this mission learning opportunity.
